Continuing Education Training

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are the number one complication associated with childbirth and one of the leading causes of maternal death in this country. With 1 in 5 new and expecting mothers/birthing people experiencing a PMAD and 80% of all cases going undetected and untreated, there is a dire need for more social workers and psychologists to be aware of these conditions. PMADs are distinctive illnesses that occur during pregnancy and postpartum, thus requiring a specific understanding of symptoms, evaluation, screening, resources, and treatment interventions.

We hope that attendees will walk away with the ability to better recognize a new or expecting mother/birthing person who may be struggling with a PMAD and how to connect them to appropriate care.

  • “Caring for Pregnancy Loss: Supporting Families Through Grief”: This training offers practical tools, language, and clinical insight to support birthing people and families through pregnancy loss, from first contact through follow-up care and referral.
  • “Paternal Mental Health: Supporting Fathers/Partners”: Learning more about how to work with fathers/partners, understanding the challenges, the prevalence of PMADs in fathers/partners, and strategies to engage couples early on in preparation for the baby and postpartum.

The Intersection of Breastfeeding and Maternal Mental Health: Guidance for Clinicians

Trainer: Sarah Rieber DNP, PMHNP-BC, WHNP-C, IBCLC, PMH-C

Breastfeeding is often described as “natural,” but for many mothers and birthing people, it can also be one of the most emotionally complex and physically demanding parts of the postpartum period. In this continuing education seminar, participants will learn how breastfeeding challenges, confidence, and expectations can influence, and be influenced by, Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). Topics include common barriers to breastfeeding, dysphoric milk ejection reflex (DMER), the role of the birth experience, the emotional impact of feeding choices, and strategies for supporting patients as they navigate feeding decisions with compassion and confidence.

Join us on January 20th, 2026, at 9:00 AM ET to gain practical tools to help patients identify feeding-related stress, validate their experiences, and connect with appropriate lactation and mental health support.

Paternal Mental Health: Supporting Fathers & Partners

Trainer: Paige Bellenbaum, LCSW, PMH-C

1 in 10 fathers/partners experience a mental health condition in the perinatal period, yet the shame and stigma prevent most from seeking support. While necessary attention is needed to ensure new and expecting mothers/birthing people are receiving appropriate treatment for their PMAD, one of the greatest risk factors for fathers to develop anxiety or depression in the perinatal period is if their partner/spouse is struggling.

Join us on February 12th, 2026, at 2:00 PM ET to learn more about the intersection of fathers/partners and PMADs.

Caring for Pregnancy Loss: Supporting Families Through Grief

Trainer: Leah Gooen, LCSW

This 2-hour training offers a comprehensive and compassionate overview of how to support birthing people and their families through pregnancy loss. Miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal loss are all too common—impacting up to 1 in 4 pregnancies. Despite its frequency, pregnancy loss is often invisible and disenfranchised, leaving families without the support they need.

Join us on March 12th, at 3:00 PM ET to gain the tools, language, and clinical insight to better support patients navigating pregnancy loss.
